The Main Components of Water
CHLORINE IONS are often found in the composition of water and are usually combined with calcium, magnesium or sodium (between 10 and 100 mg/l). A high concentration leads to a stale, bad taste of water that corrodes the pipes. Intensely chlorinated water also has a laxative effect.
The presence of POTASSIUM in the water is generally insignificant. A potassium excess can have laxative effects, but there are no maximum limits established for its presence.
Concentrations of over 0,3 mg/l IRON and 0,05 MANGANESE, lead to a metallic, unpleasant taste in the water, but have no side effects for the human health.
The FLUORIDES with a concentration of over 1,0 mg/l can reduce the risk of cavities. Concentration of over 1,5 mg/l leads to the staining or the teeth.
The concentration of NITRATES in the water must not exceed 10mg/l, a higher level could lead to metemoglobinemia (cyanosis of the infants or the blue baby disease), but with no side effects for adults.
The water with a high level of SULFURS (magnesium and iodine in particular) can have a laxative effect on a person. The high level of sulfurs affects the taste in water, that’s why the highest recommended level for sulfurs is 250 mg/l.
